Hi everyone! I have been prescribed Accutane for my severe acne. I've heard it's really effective but also comes with some serious side effects. Has anyone here taken it? How was your experience?

Hey @SunnySkies89, I took Accutane a few years back and it did wonders for my skin! But it definitely came with its downsides. Have you talked to your dermatologist about the risks involved?

Yes, @HealthyHaven123, I have spoken with my doctor but I'm still a bit nervous. Can you tell me more about what those side effects were like for you and how your dermatologist helped manage them?

Absolutely! My biggest concern was the dry skin and lips. It got pretty bad at times, so my doctor recommended using moisturizers and lip balms frequently throughout the day. Also, it's mandatory to use sunscreen daily since Accutane makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Hello @SunnySkies89! I'm a dermatologist here to answer any questions you might have about Accutane. It is indeed highly effective for severe acne but comes with some important considerations.
Firstly, it's crucial that you avoid pregnancy while on Accutane and for one month after stopping the medication as there are significant risks of birth defects. We require a negative pregnancy test before starting the treatment.
Regarding side effects, common ones include dry lips, skin, nosebleeds, and increased sun sensitivity. Your doctor will likely prescribe moisturizers to help manage these symptoms. Additionally, it's important to maintain regular check-ups with your dermatologist during treatment to monitor for any severe side effects like liver issues or changes in mood.
Do you have more specific concerns?

Thank you so much, @DrDermExpert! I hadn't thought about the pregnancy risk. That's really helpful information. And yes, managing those dry skin symptoms is a big worry for me. Does Accutane affect your vision at all? A friend mentioned their eyes got very sensitive.

Good question, @SunnySkies89! Some patients do experience eye irritation or sensitivity during treatment due to the dryness caused by Accutane. It's rare but not impossible for vision issues to occur. If you notice any changes in your vision while on the medication, its important to contact your dermatologist right away.
To mitigate these effects, using artificial tears and maintaining good hydration can help. Staying consistent with moisturizers and lubricants is key.
