Topic: Understanding Dosage and Use of Lasix (Furosemide)

Posted by: SunnySideUp

Post Date: April 21, 2023

Hey everyone,

I have been prescribed to take Lasix for my fluid retention issue. The prescription says 500 mg per day. Im a bit confused about how often and when to take it. Can anyone give me some insight or advice on this? Also, are there any side effects that I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Hi SunnySideUp,

Firstly, let's clarify a few things. Lasix (Furosemide) is indeed used for fluid retention and other related conditions like hypertension. A dosage of 500 mg per day is quite high and typically only prescribed by your doctor if you have a severe condition that requires it.

The typical dose ranges from 20 to 80 mg, but it can go up as needed based on individual requirements. It's important to follow your doctor's specific instructions because the dosage can vary depending on factors like kidney function, heart condition, and other medications you might be taking.

Regarding when to take it: Lasix is usually taken once daily in the morning to avoid frequent bathroom trips at night. However, sometimes a split dose (e.g., 250 mg twice a day) may be recommended by your doctor based on how well it works for you and any potential side effects like dehydration or electrolyte imbalances.

Side effects can include:- Frequent urination- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly- Loss of appetite- Upset stomach or vomiting- Muscle cramps or weakness (due to potassium loss)- Increased thirst

If you experience any severe side effects like fainting, chest pain, or signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching/swelling), contact your healthcare provider immediately.

It's crucial to monitor yourself for these symptoms and report back to your doctor if they become problematic. Your doctor might want to adjust the dosage based on how well its working and any side effects you're experiencing.

Please make sure to drink plenty of fluids but avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, as both can affect your bodys fluid balance while taking Lasix.

If there's anything else specific you'd like to know or if something isnt clear from what Ive explained, feel free to ask!

Thanks so much DrMedic8! That was super helpful. Its reassuring to have more context around the dosage and timing.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for those side effects and let my doctor know if anything feels off. Also, Ill try to stick with water for hydration while on this medication.

Appreciate your help!
